Why Italy Missed the 2026 World Cup: GoalBible Analysis
Italy has won the World Cup four times: 1934, 1938, 1982, and 2006. That is a legendary record. But in 2026? They are out. Again. This is the third World Cup in a row the Azzurri have missed.
Before this, they had back-to-back group stage exits in 2010 and 2014. A long fall from that 2006 high. And yes, they won Euro 2021. But that success did not carry over.
So what went wrong? From my view at GoalBible, the answer is not simple. But it starts with three things.
Bad Luck in the Draw
On the surface, Italy had some bad luck with its qualifying group. They were the top seeds, placed with Norway, Israel, Estonia, and Moldova. Even with the World Cup expanding to 48 teams, Europe only got three extra spots (from 13 to 16). Only one of those new spots was open to non-group winners.
Italy won six of its eight group games. But they faced a Norway team that finally clicked. Erling Haaland led UEFA qualifying with 16 goals. Martin Odegaard also led with seven assists in just five games, creating 25 chances.
Italy’s two losses came against Norway. Those defeats decided the group. But how they lost was even more worrying.
Defensive Problems
Italy didn’t just lose to Norway. They lost 3-0 in Oslo and 4-1 at the San Siro. Those two games showed a major issue: the defense.
Think of Italian football. Names like Maldini, Baresi, Nesta, Bonucci, Chiellini, and Cannavaro come to mind. Defense is their identity. Gianluigi Buffon is one of the best goalkeepers ever. But in eight qualifying games, Italy conceded 12 goals. Seven were against Norway, but they also let in four against Israel (two were own goals). They conceded a 13th goal in the playoff loss to Bosnia-Herzegovina. This happened despite keeping five clean sheets.
As a team, Italy made seven errors that led to shots in qualifying. Two of those led to goals. That puts them level with Armenia and Estonia. For comparison, France and Spain made one such error each. England and Germany made two.
The goalkeeping also underperformed. Across 10 qualifiers (including playoffs), Italy conceded 13 goals from 12.25 expected goals against (xGA). That is a small underperformance. But the difference between expected goals on target (xGOT) and goals conceded is worse. Italy faced 9.43 xGOT but gave up 13 goals. That is a negative difference of 3.57. Only three teams had a worse record: San Marino, Bulgaria, and Liechtenstein. That is not the company any Italian fan wants.
Systemic Failure
Italy's problems run deeper than what happens on the pitch. I see this clearly at GoalBible. After the loss to Bosnia-Herzegovina, federation president Gabriele Gravina resigned. Then he released a 3,500-word report on the "state of Italian football." Some of it was self-serving. But he also revealed hard truths. Italian fans felt the same way. The system is broken.
The biggest issue? Young Italian players do not get minutes. Check Serie A this season. 565 players have made at least one appearance. Only 164 are Italian (29.03%). The Premier League's equivalent figure is 29.51% for English players.
But here is the real problem. Out of those 164 Italian players, only 29 started the season at age 21 or under. That is just 5.13% of all players. And that counts guys like Matteo Lavelli (seven minutes) and Giuseppe Ambrosino (35 minutes across three games). The Premier League? Almost 10% of appearances go to English players aged 21 or under.
Serie A ranks last among Europe's top five leagues in both domestic player usage and Under-21 domestic player usage. The top two are France and Spain. France won the 2018 World Cup and finished as runners-up in 2022, while Spain is the current European champions.
What GoalBible Suggests
Italy needs a system change. More playing time for young Italian talents in Serie A is a must. Without that, the national team will keep falling behind.
