Phil Foden 26/27 Analysis: The Solution to Enzo Maresca’s Attacking Dilemmas
Phil Foden might be exactly what Enzo Maresca needs to fix several attacking issues at once.
He joined the club at eight years old, and he has already made 377 appearances for Manchester City, scoring 114 goals and lifting plenty of major trophies, including six Premier League titles. Since winning the POTY award in 2023/24, though, he has struggled to secure a regular starting spot, with his performances becoming increasingly inconsistent.
With Pep Guardiola gone this summer and a new manager in charge, Foden has a real chance to redefine his role and take his game to another level. He is 26 now, which should be his prime years.
Why Maresca’s Trust Could Be Key to Foden’s Revival
Foden's revival started with a change in how player and manager relate to each other. According to The Guardian, Maresca had several personal conversations with Foden, stressing how important he is to the team and his belief that the midfielder could get back to his best. After returning to the scoresheet against Ipswich Town, Foden took things up a level with a hat-trick against AEK Athens, scoring four goals across two straight appearances.
Maresca explained his confidence in Foden after the AEK match: "I said since day one I consider him one of the best English players." He also admitted Foden had gone through a tough two years but said City were working to help him find his best form again.
I think this matters because confidence alone does not explain a player's recovery. Foden also needs chances to influence games and a clearly defined role that suits his strengths. His recent performances suggest Maresca is starting to give him both. Competition is still intense, though, especially with Cherki pushing for a prominent attacking role. Foden's challenge is to turn a promising return into consistent performances rather than rely on a short scoring burst.
Where Does Phil Foden Fit into Maresca’s Plans?
Foden's start under Maresca has been mixed. He played on the right for a few games, then sat on the bench against Coventry. Maresca opted for more natural wide options in Antoine Semenyo and Iliman Ndiaye, with Rayan Cherki operating in attacking midfield. Foden came back against Manchester United but was sent off after 23 minutes. He missed the next two Premier League games.
At number 10, his best spot, Foden is up against one of the best young players in the world right now, with Cherki often getting the nod. But when Foden returned against Ipswich in the league, he started in attacking midfield and scored.
Most of his minutes this season have come on the right, yet he still has four goals and three assists in the Premier League and Champions League combined. That is level with Cherki on seven goal contributions, even though Foden played 131 fewer minutes.

Foden has not been a sure starter under Maresca, but he has been a useful option because he can play in different attacking roles. Maresca likes that when he builds a balanced starting XI.
For me, the mix of making chances and getting into the box is the best part. Foden can help build an attack and then get into a spot to finish it. But being able to play anywhere can become a problem if a player keeps getting moved around and never finds a rhythm. Maresca has to decide if Foden is mainly a creator, a goalscoring midfielder, or a wide attacker in each game.
Foden vs Cherki: Complementary Creators or Tactical Competition?

I would much rather see Foden and Cherki complement each other than fight over the same creative role. Their skill is most valuable when they give the attack two different answers.
In a Premier League match in 2025/26, I looked at how Guardiola fit both players into a 4-3-2-1. Foden usually played deeper on the left of central midfield, while Cherki was the right-sided number 10. City scored 12 goals in the five league games where both started.
One moment really stands out. Against Crystal Palace, Cherki carried the ball forward, pulled defenders toward him, then released Foden into space. Foden scored from outside the box. That is the idea in a nutshell: one player's movement makes a shooting chance for the other.
I think Maresca can use the same principle without copying Guardiola's shape exactly. Foden could drop deeper to help move the ball forward, while Cherki takes on more of the job of breaking lines with his dribbling and passing.
Both players love drifting toward the ball, and that is where the risk lies. Once they crowd the same central area, City lose their width and become easier to defend against. So if they are going to play together, their positional duties have to be crystal clear, and someone up front has to keep running to stretch the opposition back line.
Could Foden Be Maresca’s Alternative to Haaland?
Foden is a situational option for me, not a like-for-like replacement. You could see how differently he can lead the attack in City's 5-1 Champions League win over AEK Athens on 20th October 2026.
As a false nine, Foden can drop toward midfield to pull a defender out of position, then move into the gap between the opposition's midfield and defence. Against AEK, that movement worked really well with Cherki and Rico Lewis. Foden dropped deep, Lewis ran beyond the defensive line, and that gave Cherki a forward pass. Lewis then laid the ball softly into Foden's path, and he attacked the space and finished. That one sequence showed how Foden creates chances through movement and quick combinations rather than fighting centre-backs.
I also think his pressing and his habit of arriving late in the box could help City keep their attacking intensity without Haaland. But the trade-off is clear. Foden is not built to pin centre-backs, win headers, or give the team a steady target for crosses. Against teams that defend deep, that gap could limit what City can do.
Why Foden Could Be the Ideal Replacement for Semenyo
Foden suits the Semenyo replacement job because he offers something Semenyo does not: cleaner decisions in the final third. Semenyo wins with raw speed and direct running, but Foden's smaller touches, sharper take-ons, and better choices in tight spots make him a strong fit on the right while Semenyo is out. In some ways, he could be an upgrade, not just a stand-in.
Semenyo could miss up to eight weeks, so Foden's minutes on the right now matter a lot. With Haaland expected to return after being rested against AEK Athens, the right wing could become Foden's clearest route back into the starting XI. That is where he started against AEK, holding the touchline while Lewis moved into the right pocket and Cherki played as the number 10.
I see Maresca's idea for wide players pretty clearly. He wants them to stay wide, wait for the 1v1 against the full-back, and win that duel with quality. Semenyo fits that with pure speed. Foden fits it in another way. His take-ons per 90 this season (0.91) and fouls won per 90 (1.82) show a player who beats defenders with control and close touches, not a burst of pace.
For me, the real gap between them shows up after the dribble. Semenyo can get into good spots and go either way off both feet, but his choices in the final third can let him down, especially when he has to pick a pass or a shot outside a straight 1v1. I think Foden stays calmer there. He links with teammates, waits for the right moment, and finishes the move with more quality. That is why I see this run as more than a stopgap.
What Is the Best Way to Use Foden for 2027?
For me, Foden is at his best when he is not asked to do everything at once. Give him a setup that lets his movement, skill and decision-making solve clear problems, and he will deliver. If Maresca gets that balance right, Foden could become one of City's most useful attackers. Not because he can play everywhere, but because he can change how City attack when the moment calls for it. Whether it is a false nine to rest Haaland or a fill-in on the right for Semenyo, he should get a steady run of games over the next eight weeks. For a 26-year-old under a new manager, I think that is a real chance to reset his role.
How Does Foden's Role Shape the Man City vs Brighton Markets?
A player who can change how City attack gives bookmakers something awkward to price. That is why Foden's role is one of the first things I check for the Man City vs Brighton match.
Note: Odds are accurate as of 30 Oct 2026.
Foden's league stats so far are two assists in six appearances, 11 key passes, and 1.94 expected assists. His 2.90 key passes per 90 stand out, highlighting his ability to consistently create shooting opportunities for teammates. Haaland's return could make Foden's creative numbers even more significant, as having a reliable goalscorer in the box gives his passes a greater chance of producing goals. Against Brighton, his best route is the space between the lines. If he receives there, Haaland becomes the target for the final ball.

Brighton should not be underestimated in this fixture, particularly given their ability to create attacking opportunities against Manchester City. Their previous League Cup meeting ended 2-2 after 90 minutes, demonstrating that Brighton can find ways to trouble City's defence.
Foden's attacking involvement could also play an indirect role in making this an open contest. His tendency to operate in advanced areas and contribute to City's attacking combinations could encourage the team to commit more players forward. While this gives City additional attacking options, it may also leave spaces for Brighton to exploit during transitions. Brighton's ability to move the ball quickly after regaining possession could become particularly important if City lose possession with several players positioned ahead of the ball.
