2026 World Cup Draw: Full Groups, Pots & Teams Breakdown | GoalBible
Football fans, we finally have clarity. The 2026 World Cup draw is complete, and I’ve spent hours breaking down what it means for the expanded 48-team tournament.
Canada, Mexico, and the United States are co-hosting next summer. That’s a first—three nations sharing duties. Their spots were automatic. The other 45 teams earned their place through a global qualifying campaign across six confederations.
At GoalBible, I like to cut through the noise. So here’s everything you actually need to know about the draw.

The draw went down on 5 December 2025 at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., at 5pm UK time. If you missed it live, don’t worry. FIFA streamed the draw on their official website and YouTube channel. International broadcasters like the BBC in the UK also carried it. Most of those replays are still available.

How Does World Cup 2026 Qualification Work?
UEFA (Europe)
Qualification started with a draw in December 2024. 54 nations were split into 12 groups. Each group winner qualified automatically. The play-offs in March 2026 decided four more European spots. Those came from the best UEFA Nations League teams that hadn’t already qualified. The UEFA play-off draw happened on 20th November 2025.
CONMEBOL (South America)
This one’s simple. All 10 nations played home and away—18 matchdays in a single table. The top six qualified automatically. The seventh-place team went to the inter-confederation play-offs.
CAF (Africa)
Africa got nine direct spots. That’s a huge jump from five in 2022. 54 teams were drawn into nine groups of six. Each group winner qualified directly. The four best runners-up played a mini-tournament for Africa’s potential 10th spot via the play-offs.
AFC (Asia)
Asia now has eight guaranteed World Cup spots, plus one possible extra through the play-offs. The process had five rounds. The final stage featured three groups of six. Top two in each group qualified. Third and fourth place went to another round. The winners of those two three-team groups qualified. The runners-up faced each other for Asia’s play-off spot.
CONCACAF (North & Central America)
Three co-hosts got automatic entry. That left three more direct places and two play-off spots. Rounds two and three started in June 2024. A final 12-team phase decided the region’s qualifiers. Jamaica and Suriname still have a shot through the inter-confederation play-offs.
OFC (Oceania)
For the first time ever, Oceania has a direct spot. New Zealand claimed that place in March. New Caledonia heads to the inter-confederation play-offs.
Inter-confederation play-offs
Six teams total: one each from Africa, Asia, Oceania, and South America, plus two from CONCACAF. They’re split into two paths. Two teams are seeded by FIFA rankings and go straight to the final rounds. The other four play single-elimination semi-finals. The two winners of those final matches complete the tournament field.
GoalBible Final Verdict on World Cup Draw
From what I’ve seen at GoalBible, the expanded format makes the group stage less predictable. That’s good for neutral fans. But top teams face more early risk. I think we’ll see at least two or three “giant killings” in the group phase.
