LIZ Teaches Betting Basics: Asian Handicaps –0.75
Hey everyone, LIZ here again. Let’s continue with our “Road to Punters” series. I will introduce everyone to the Asian handicap basics by explaining why the bookie makes it, and share some rough judgment techniques when this kind of handicap appears. Hopefully, this makes it easier for you to get into the world of soccer betting and turn your knowledge into steady profits.
Today, we will dive into the 0.75 handicap, also known as the 0.5/1 handicap.
Asian Handicap Payout Explanation
To make things clearer for everyone, we’ll use USD$ to set up the scenario.
-
Each bet is $1,000
-
Home team odds: 1.8
-
Away team odds: 1.9
If you bet on the home team giving 0.75 and the home team wins by 2 or more goals, you earn a net profit of $800. If you bet on the away team receiving 0.75 and the away team wins or draws, you earn a net profit of $900.
What’s special is if the home team wins by exactly 1 goal:
-
Betting on the home team wins half— you earn $400 ($800/2);
-
Betting on the away team loses half—you lose half of the stake and get back $500.
(Note: On some score apps, the “-” sign before the handicap indicates the away team is giving the handicap; if there’s no “-” sign, it means the home team is giving the handicap.)
Asian Handicap Meaning
A 0.75 handicap given by the home team is actually unfavorable for the home team because it’s highly misleading. If the home team is more well-known and gives a 0.75 handicap, people will think that winning by just one goal already wins half the bet and that there’s still a chance to win the full amount, so the home team will attract a lot of attention, and betting money won’t easily flow to the away team. Often in such cases, even if the home team wins, it’s hard for them to fully cover the handicap.
If the away team gives a 0.75 handicap, there’s no particularly higher probability on either side.
Asian Handicap Practical Application
If the home team’s recent form is better than the away team’s, and they also have a higher reputation, and the opening line is the home team giving 0.75, then later the odds slightly drop, and this is maintained until the match starts, the chance of the away team covering the handicap is not low. That’s because the home team is already the popular side, and with the added push from this type of handicap, if no adjustments are made leading up to the match, it means the bookmaker is not afraid of the home team winning big and covering. It creates a false sense that betting on the home team is safe.
But the truth is, many unexpected upsets happen under this kind of setup. You should observe more in these cases, as 0.75 handicaps are especially deceptive; even a slight drop in odds can be very risky. In such cases, it’s better to stay away than to follow the crowd in betting on the home team.
